Meet the Orchestra
On this page we'll tell you about the Melbourne Sinfonia and the people involved with it.
Here is your list:
The Melbourne Sinfonia is one of Melbourne's best non-professional
symphony orchestras. The Melbourne Sinfonia is the resident
symphony orchestra of the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne.
Since our foundation in 1990 we have presented high-quality
concert programs of symphonic music several times a year. In recent years our concerts
have taken place in Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne.
The orchestra attracts distinguished soloists, advanced non-professional
and semi-professional players as well as a number of music
students and teachers. As a result, the standard of playing
is generally high and the repertoire is chosen accordingly.
Our Musical Director - Joannes Roose (back to Top of Page)
Joannes Roose studied conducting in Vienna on a Churchill Fellowship, and upon his return to Australia
founded the Sinfonia of Adelaide, and directed the Adelaide University Choral Society, the Adelaide
Liedertafel, and numerous orchestral performances. In 1972 he was chorus master for the first
authentic production in Australia of Rameau's Pygmalion under the musical direction of Richard Divall.
Subsequently he was Musical Director for the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust in two outstandingly
successful seasons of Gilbert and Sullivan operas starring Dennis Olsen, and for the South Australian
Theatre Company. As guest conductor he worked with the ABC Adelaide Singers, The Elder Conservatorium
Orchestra, New Music, and the Adelaide Metropolitan Light Opera Company.
From 1982 to 1993 he conducted the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in a wide range of recordings,
subscription concerts and live-to-air National FM broadcasts, and presented over 200 concerts for school
children with the TSO and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. As Dean of the Tasmanian Conservatorium
he directed the Conservatorium's orchestra, and conducted numerous opera and oratorio productions.
In Melbourne since 1994, Joannes Roose has directed orchestral and wind ensemble training programs
for schools such as Toorak College (Mt Eliza) and the Geelong College, as well as for the State Education
Department and the Victorian College of the Arts. He was Musical Director of the Frankston Symphony
Orchestra for five years, and appears as a regular guest conductor of the Zelman Symphony and Stonnington
Symphony Orchestra. He is currently Musical Director of the Melbourne Sinfonia, and Visiting Professor of
Conducting at the Australian Defence Force Academy of Music.
